Fumiaki FUKITA

As a pioneering modern printmaker in postwar Japan, Fumiaki Fukita (b. 1926) blended traditional woodblock techniques with bold abstraction. After a period as an art educator, he became head of printmaking at Tama Art University and a central figure in Japan’s creative print movement. Fascinated with cosmic forms and rhythmic geometry, Fukita expanded the art of woodblock engraving through inventive color techniques and embossing. His prints have been exhibited internationally and are included in significant collections from Tokyo to London, as well as in Chicago and Washington, D.C.
