View full detailsBoth the paintings and the prints by Eugène Carrière (1849-1906) can be easily recognized. His nearly monochromatic palette, and his “smoky” stroke, which some have called symbolist in nature, are really all his own. A portraitist at heart, Carrière relished in shrouding all of his sitters in the mystery of his hazy style. Many famous authors, painters and dignitaries of his time share the painter’s attention with anonymous sitters. All must reveal their character in his compositions, in which the eyes often seem to pierce into the subject’s innermost emotions.
