Engelbert LAP

Engelbert Lap (1886–1970) was an Austrian printmaker and painter renowned for his luminous color woodcuts, which depicted Alpine landscapes, historic architecture, and scenes of rural life in Austria and beyond. Working in the early to mid-20th century, Lap brought a refined sensibility to the Japanese-inspired woodcut revival in Europe, blending bold design with subtle tonal variation. His prints often convey a sense of serenity and reverence for place. Lap exhibited frequently in Austria and Germany, and his work found enthusiastic support in Europe and the United States during the interwar years. Today, his works remain admired for their technical skill and their ability to evoke both the physical and cultural spirit of Central Europe.
