Edward Julius DETMOLD

Together with his twin brother Charles Maurice Detmold, Edward Julius Detmold was one of the most famous illustrators of Victorian England. The brothers worked on their artwork jointly and were first exhibited at the Royal Academy at the young age of 13. Influenced by their uncle's Japanese woodblock print collection, their studies of natural history, and the Victorian practices of obsessive detail and idyllic scenery, the brothers' style was a unique blend of intricate natural detail and stylization. Mastering etching and aquatint in their teens, printmaking was integral to their creative process. They purchased a printing press and proofed all their plates themselves in their home. After Charles Maurice's unfortunate demise in 1907, Edward Julius continued creating illustrations and had a very successful career, illustrating the first English editions of such famous tomes as The Jungle Book, Aesop's Fables, and The Arabian Nights - Tales from the Thousand and One Nights.
