Drawings by the favorite painter of Napoléon III are scarce. The overwhelming majority are studies which carry minimal interest out of context. Ours, a particularly finished drawing, is an unusual subject for this artist. Cabanel was known for social portrait of the upper echelons of society. This elegant composition of a working-class women stands out.
