Bestial Man
Homme Bestial (original French title)
Pen and brush in on thick wove paper.
Signed in the image in ink.
Provenance: P. Guérin (?), with his green monogram stamp (Lugt 1195).
This striking bearded face is unusually intense, even by the standards of the caricatures of Letuaire. The sad and piercing gaze of this creature is equivocal, somewhere between divine and bestial. Whatever one makes of it, Letuaire worked this composition, using his pen literally to scrape into the paper to allow the ink to seep deeper and create darkness. The small size of this work shouldn't deceive. It's a powerful work of art.
Framed.
