Donald Shaw MacLAUGHLAN

Donald Shaw MacLaughlan (1876–1938) was a Canadian-American printmaker renowned for his etchings, particularly views of Venice, London, Bruges, and Paris.  MacLaughlan studied in Boston before moving to Paris in 1898, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. Deeply influenced by Whistler’s tonalism, but with his own distinctive style and expressive line quality, he captured the mood and texture of the great European cities with nuance. He achieved early success, and his prints were widely collected during his lifetime. MacLaughlan became central to the etching revival movement of the early 20th century, exhibiting with leading print societies in Europe and North America. He produced approximately three hundred prints during his career, which remain sought after to this day for their technical finesse and lyrical compositions.
