Son of renowned art collector Hidde Nijland, Dirk Hidde Nijland (1881–1955) was immersed in fine art from a young age. He trained under Antoon Derkinderen and studied at the Rijksschool voor Kunstnijverheid in Amsterdam and the Academy in Rotterdam. Influenced by both Dutch and German Expressionism, Nijland became known as a skilled graphic artist—working as an etcher, lithographer, illustrator, and woodcut maker. Around 1915, encouraged by the art critic H.P. Bremmer, he began to specialize in woodcuts and engravings. His prints often depict river landscapes, harbor scenes, industrial vistas, town views, religious subjects, and figures. He exhibited alongside prominent names at early 20th-century group shows in Paris and The Hague. His works are held in Dutch institutions such as the Centraal Museum Utrecht, Museum De Fundatie, and the Kröller‑Müller Museum.
