Funeral Procession on the Boulevard Clichy

"Convoi Funèbre au Boulevard de Clichy" (original French title)

Etching, aquatint, roulette, and touches of drypoint printed in color, from three plates, on wove paper.

The states of this print, given its many color variants, are hard to comprehend. It is however clear that the second state is much lighter than the third. Our impression, however, is annotated "4e Etat". Ours is one of the proofs mentioned by Bourcard with an additional outside margin, devoid of representation. An impression without this supplemental border in The National Gallery of Art, DC is annotated "3e Etat". It is very likely that Buhot considered impressions without the extra border the third state, and those with the additional border, the fourth. 
This is a brilliant impression, overall in very good condition, with the additional border in black ink, adding to the drama of the scene as the gold ink (used in some other such 4th states) does not.
Signed and annotated in pencil and with the large red owl stamp (Lugt 977), in the image.
With the J and G (Jim Goodfriend) initials, forming a butterfly stamped on the verso.
Repairs and discolorations on the verso, none really affecting the image.
