Description

Paysage en Toscane (original French title)

Etching on laid paper, no date.
Reference: Bertin 542.
Signed in pencil, and bearing the artist’s red monogram stamp.

According to Bertin this composition was etched after a painting by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot.  This painting however could not be located.  What can be found, even though its whereabouts are currently unknown, is a painting by Guérard’s wife, Eva Gonzalès, who had studied landscape painting with Edouard Manet.  Guérard who admired his wife as an artist, and who died in childbirth, reproduced a few of her paintings as prints (see the image included in this entry).
