Building a Babylon, Tudor City, N.Y.C.

Date
1929
Description

Drypoint on wove paper with two flower watermarks (papermaker unidentified).
Reference: McCarron 76.

Edition of 84.

Lewis uses the dramatic nighttime electric lighting to enhance the looming quality of the nascent city of high-rises. For scale he sketches the silhouette of a worker walking toward the viewer. By comparison, the hulking crane atop the mound of dirt on the left is nearly the same size as the man, thus suggesting just how ambitious the construction of this middle-class high-rise development was.
