Charles GUERIN

A French Post-Impressionist painter and lithographer who studied under Gustave Moreau, Charles-François-Prosper Guérin (1875–1939) produced refined color prints and illustrations—often in a decorative and literary vein. However, La Sirène (1896–97) is a striking anomaly in his oeuvre: a surreal, symbolist lithograph printed on Japon volant, published by L’Estampe Moderne and realized at Imprimerie Champenois. The composition evokes a haunting conjunction of myth and menace, creating an atmosphere rich in narrative ambiguity and emotional pull. This rare print stands apart from Guérin’s typical work, highlighting his capacity for visual invention and symbolic resonance.
