Martyr Square and the "Penal Colony" Tavern
La Place des Martyrs et la Taverne du Bagne (original French title)
Etching and aquatint printed in two tones on tan wove paper.
Reference: Bourcard & Goodfriend 163 iii/iii.
Printed in warm black ink, contrasted with a brown ink used for the windows of the tavern, the sign above the door, and on the gaslights, evoking the warm atmosphere inside the establishment. These kinds of colored touches are found in only a few impressions. Stop-out and wiped highlights are also evident throughout the print, with the marginal subjects printed lighter.
Signed with the large red owl stamp in the plate (Lugt 977).
With the J and G (Jim Goodfriend) initials, forming a butterfly stamped on the verso of both sheets.
On a thin paper, that has toned with time, with good margins and a few edge losses and tears, some repaired. Otherwise, a magnificent impression.
