A Cook Christmas Card

Barbara LATHAM
Date
1937
Description

Woodcut on thin Japan paper.

Edition unknown, but likely one of a handful of impressions only. Aside from a couple of published prints, most woodcuts by Latham do not seem to have been editioned. This one was obviously created after she met and then married Howard Cook in 1926-27. She depicts herself in the mirror looking quite young, which suggests a date around that time. However, this print, like several other impressions of assorted woodcuts by Latham were printed by New Mexico painter-printmaker Sina Brush, who was born in 1947, and who was taught printmaking in 1967-69 at the University of New Mexico. We assume Latham had Brush print a few impressions much later than when this block was carved. The Smithsonian dates this print from 1937. We have followed their lead but have not been able to confirm this date.

Signed, titled, and signed by the printer in pencil.
