Bernard BRUSSEL-SMITH

Bernard Brussel-Smith (1914-1989) proved that being called a one-trick-pony does not need to be pejorative.  A lifelong New Yorker, he was introduced early in his artistic education to wood engraving.  It became a technique to which he dedicated his life.  Both in black and white, and in color, he created extremely fine compositions, printed with great care.  Biblical scenes and landscapes are his most common themes.  He was particularly inspired by the summer vacations he spent in the South of France.  His family and he spent many a summer in Collonges-la-Rouge.  Brussel-Smith also carved quite a bit for illustrational purposes, as such bringing back the technique to its roots.
