Description

Etching and drypoint printed in two tones on simili-Japan paper.

Reference: Bourcard & Goodfriend 177.

Seventh and final state.

A beautiful “saucy” impression showcasing the artist’s ability to contrast not just the main subject and the symphonic margins, but also the composition itself. Various areas of wiping in the ink, and moodiness imparted by selective wiping of the ink throughout the plate shows how the work for Buhot would not only be done by etching the plate, but also by printing it in particularly unique ways, to make each impression stand out.

Signed in pencil. Also bearing the artist’s red owl stamp (Lugt 977).

Two creases at the bottom (on perhaps a tear), away from the image. Slight rippling in the left sheet edge. Gum residue (from prior mounting?) on the verso. These few defects should be overlooked by the discerning collector who can focus on how gloriously inky this particular impression is.
