Barbara NEUSTADT

American artist Barbara Neustadt (1922-1998) was a printmaker’s printmaker. She studied art and printmaking all over the country, served her obligatory and canonizing stint at Atelier 17 in New York, as well as learning lithography from New York’s greats such as Margaret Lowengrund, Bob Blackburn and Michael Ponce de Leon. She even started her own publishing company named Pleiades Press / Studio Graphic Art Centre in Woodstock, NY. We describe these mere facts of her life to stress that Neustadt’s artistry was equally interested in learning the processes of printmaking and their experimental nature, as she was using in this knowledge to create specific effects and compositions. Her prints are both balanced and daring, using color as expression throughout her complex abstraction. There is not only dimension in the layering of her colors and plates, but also in the objectual quality of her paper, as she often incorporated papercasting into her work. Her prints can be found in public collections across the country, and considering their rarity, it is a special treat when one happens upon a print by Barbara Neustadt for sale.
