Armand BERTON

A Paris-born painter, engraver, and illustrator, Armand Berton (1854-1927) first apprenticed in the ateliers of Alexandre Cabanel and Adolphe Yvon before entering the École des Beaux-Arts in the early 1870s. During this time he became completely deaf and was compelled to leave the school. It speaks to his passion and tenacity that he continued his artistic education independently, developing a luminous and expressive style that defined his later career.

Berton exhibited at the Paris Salon beginning in 1875 and later with the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts from 1892 onward. In 1900, he was awarded a Gold Medal at the Salon des Artistes Français and made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur. His prints—primarily drypoints and etchings—are distinguished by their sensitivity of line and tonal depth, qualities that mirror the resilience and refinement of his artistic journey.
