Description

Aquatint on chine-collé, highlighted with red ink.
Reference: BN-IFF 26.
Trial proof, richly inked and dramatically enhanced with red ink.  Far more attractive than the impressions found in the book for which it was intended (see image).  Unique as such; and a magnificent Romantic aquatint.  This suite of etchings is regarded as the highlight of Chenay’s career as an interpretive printmaker.
Intended for Dessins de V. Hugo, with a text by the eminently respected Théophile Gautier, Paris, 1863.

Image: 5 ½ x 7 ⅜ inches.
Plate: 7 ⅛ x 11 ¼ inches.

Scattered foxing, mostly in the margins, and completely unobtrusive.
