Initially painting in a cubist manner, (1896-1987) André Masson’s style evolved quickly towards surrealism, to the use of fluid and undulating lines. This eventually led him towards abstraction. While Masson moved between representational art and abstraction easily, his choice of colors is generally speaking quite constant. Masson loved to paint and draw brightly. His subject matters are diverse, and when abstract, evocative shapes are often noticeable. He did however, often let erotic subjects enter his compositions and thus, the human form can often be detected in some way. His oeuvre as a printmaker is mostly lithographic and most of it is in color. He illustrated quite a bit for livres d’artistes, but also designed many fine art color lithographs.
