Allen W. SEABY
Allen William Seaby was a British painter, printmaker, illustrator, author, and art educator. Born in London in 1867, he studied color woodblock printing with Frank Morley Fletcher at the School of Art in Reading, becoming an important figure in the British revival of traditional Japanese woodblock techniques.
Seaby joined the staff of what became the University of Reading in 1899 and later served as Professor of Fine Art and head of the art department. He became known for his mastery of subtle tonal gradations and color printing, producing atmospheric woodcuts distinguished by close observation and strong decorative design.
A devoted naturalist, Seaby frequently depicted birds, horses, and the British landscape. He also wrote and illustrated books on art, wildlife, and native ponies, bringing together his interests in printmaking, education, and the natural world. His work helped bridge the divide between fine art and wildlife illustration.
