The Family
Lithograph on wove paper. Edition of 12.
Agnes Tait's output wasn’t large and most of her editions were small. This is an extremely scarce lithograph. We were not able to find any trace of another impression, either in museum collections, or sold at auction.
The finesse of the lines is accentuated by judicious scraping of the stone to provide fine white highlights. Tait uses such scrapings for the whiskers, but also in the fur and the basket. She is thus able to sharply define the tumble of four kittens, revealing the personality of each, and the contented pride of their mother.
Signed, titled, annotated "ed/12" in pencil, partially in the image.
