Rainy Afternoon
Etching, soft-ground, and aquatint on laid paper.
Stated edition of 100, which seams unlikely to have been printed. We have yet to find another impression of this print anywhere.
It seems almost certain that Ruth Leaf, who wasn’t often depicting animals in her etchings, was inspired Alexandre Théophile Steinlen, of “Chat Noir” fame. He sketched cats by the hundreds, and etched some famous cat prints, which fetch 10 to 20 times more than this print. A cat etching by Steinlen can be found in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts that looks nearly identical to the left one in our print (see HERE).
Signed, titled, and numbered in pencil.
