Insect (Butterfly)
Color viscosity intaglio print on wove Arches paper.
Artist’s proof. No stated edition has been identified, and the three other impressions found are color variants, at least one of which is also indicated to be an artist’s proof.
A delicate balance of textures is visible in this print. We suspect pure-line engraving in the “ribs”, but also some open bite, likely some aquatint in the granular elements, as well as drypoint-like texture in the curls in the upper right plate corner.
Signed and annotated “Epreuve d’Artiste” in pencil.
This impression was printed in Paris and was given or sold to Bernard Brussel-Smith when he visited and worked at Atelier 17 in 1957 and 1958. Thence by descent, owned by his son until we acquired it.
