Hiawatha

Date
1918
Description

Woodcut printed on chine-volant, affixed to wove paper, 1918.
Reference: not in BN-IFF.
We were unsurprisingly unable to find any reference to this print, which is indicated to be a single existing artist’s proof.  While this, like much of the artist’s work, was possibly created as a book illustration, we have not found what it’s intended purpose might have been.
Signed, dated “1918”, annotated “épreuve d’artiste unique” in pencil.  Also bearing the artist red monogram stamp.  It’s also annotated, in what looks like another hand, as being part of the collection of his first wife, who died in 1930.  It is, finally, identified as being inspired by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s Song of Hiawatha (a poem from 1855).
