View full detailsAlexandre Charpentier (1856-1909) was a French artist best known for his finely modeled reliefs and medallions. Charpentier applied the same sensitivity to form and texture in his lithographic work, often depicting working-class subjects, quiet interiors, and scenes of domestic labor. A member of the Société des peintres-graveurs français, he was part of a movement to elevate original printmaking as an independent art form, not merely a reproductive medium. His lithographs are marked by soft tonal gradations, sculptural chiaroscuro, and a deeply humanist sensibility. Though his printed output was relatively limited, Charpentier’s work remains admired for its fusion of fine draftsmanship, social insight, and formal innovation within the medium. He is also remembered as one of just a few 19th-century artists to have added a third dimension to his prints by embossing them. Along with Henri Lefort-des-Ylouses, and Pierre Roche, Charpentier is known for what is named "gaufrage" (literally, "waffling") in French.
