The Newspaper (4th state)
Le Journal (original French title)
Etching and drypoint printed on light gray laid paper.
Reference: Wentworth 73c.
Wentworth’s trial proof “c”; actually very likely a fourth state of seven, as per the pencil annotation (see below).
A very scarce, possibly unique state proof, before the edition in the seventh state. Before extensive additional shading in the chestnut leaves in the background. This is Wentworth personal impression; very likely the one reproduced in his catalogue raisonné (page 285).
Annotated “4e etat/VII” in pencil (possibly by Jean-Claude Romand, Sagot-Le Garrec, Paris), lower left sheet corner.
Provenance: Michael Wentworth, with his stamp (Lugt 4860).
Bearing the red “JCC” collector stamp (not in Lugt).
Very fine impression, in excellent condition, aside from some surface soiling, and a few short tears and one water stain, well away from the plate. Overally still in very fine condition for such a scarce working proof.
