found such letters in the collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale (\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/gallica.bnf.fr\/ark:\/12148\/btv1b10507854b\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Letter from Jules Chadel with a drawing or print\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003esee one HERE\u003c\/a\u003e).  This was a way for the artist to promote his work, while also graciously giving away a work of art to a patron.\u003cbr\u003eIn this letter, Chadel tries to sell the aforementioned book, of which he seemed to still have had a few copies at the time.  He offers to discount of a third, willing to sell the book for 3000 francs instead of 4500, upon recommendation of a common friend named Henri Prost, a famous city planner of his time.\u003cbr\u003eSigned, dated, located and fully handwritten letter in purple ink.\u003cbr\u003eUnique as such.  Fine artists’ ephemeras from the interbellum, such as this one, have become extremely scarce.  Such attractive objects are small windows into the lives of the This print depicts the sport at a time when few artists would have chosen it as a subject. The leather helmets which do not yet have protective face masks suggest a date of circa 1935. It is also clearly inspired by German Expressionist woodcuts which Scalzo would have only been exposed to firsthand while she studied at the Art Institute in Chicago. Our print was created by a woman artist, depicting a burly male activity, in a mostly rural part of the country. That such an artist, who had only spent two years in the big city would create such a strong, unique, and sophisticated woodcut, printed on a kind of paper you didn’t exactly find at the corner store, is simply stunning in many ways. We assume Latham had Brush print a few impressions much later than when this block was carved. The Smithsonian dates this print from 1937.
