Richard ROYCE

Richard Royce (Born August 18, 1941) lives in Oregon.  Today mostly active as a classical and flamenco guitar artist, Royce for many years made prints.  He grew up in New York, before studying printmaking under and Warrington Colescott and Alfred Sessler, as well as sculpture, at the University of Wisconsin.  With his MFA in hand Royce left for France where he further trained with Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17 in Paris.  Upon his return to the states, Royce dedicated himself first and foremost to printmaking.  He lived in various places, including in New York and Califonia, then in Oregon.  For approximately 40 years he created prints, cast papers and sculptures.  In parallel to his own creation he also ran a home studio named Atelier Royce which printed for many artist friends, such as Françoise Gilot, Yozo Hamaguchi and many other artists.  His prints are often either colorful and evocative abstractions, or animal depictions, generally printed monochromatically.
