{"title":"Richard RANFT","description":"\u003cp\u003eRichard Ranft (1862-1931) arrived in Paris from his native Switzerland already partially trained as an artist.  He furthered his education with Gustave Courbet, but quickly seemed to find work.  Ranft was multifaceted.  He illustrated a number of books, which is not surprising since he was also a writer.  Thanks to his training he was also an accomplished painter, and created interpretative color aquatint, after 18\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e and 19\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e century painters mostly.  He is today mostly remembered for his colorful original aquatints, which are compositionally diverse, and very bright.  It is unclear how many of these he created, but probably no more than a few dozen.  They were generally printed in editions of 50, published by Charles Hessèle and have today become quite scarce.\u003c\/p\u003e","products":[{"product_id":"bal-costumz","title":"Bal Costumé","description":"\u003cp\u003ePrinted à la poupée on Arches laid paper. Aside from being a beautiful impression in pristine condition by one of the masters of color intaglio at the turn-of-the-century, this is also an amazing document. Not only is it one of very few prints by Richard Ranft with a date firmly established, it also shows that by the summer of 1899 his style and color technique were already well established. Many of his prints which are dated after 1900 may actually be anterior to that time. In addition to this, we have a rare printer's proof, approved for the edition by the publisher of L'Estampe Nouvelle, Eugène Rodrigues. This publication, founded in 1897, seems to have run at least until 1914 (a menu from May 24th of that year was printed). It was limited to a membership of 50 subscribers. Two beautifully dressed women are donning fine summer dresses on their morning walk. This is not a quick casual outing to have the dog go and do his business. The redheaded woman has taken the time to tie a black ribbon choker around her neck, while the black-haired woman slipped into a fitted and arresting red dress and took her fancy umbrella along. Puffy clouds suggest a lazy breeze. The blue-green water suggests the sun striking the water's surface. The umbrella and the light white dress evoke the possibility of summer heat. At their feet, a Belgian malinois (malinois noir) is trying to decide what comes next. Did he just come from a run, or is he about the take off? The elegant white cross is prominently displayed in this print. This dog was their owner's pride.
