Published by Boydell beginning in the 1770s, the series became a landmark of British reproductive printmaking and helped extend mezzotint beyond portraiture into landscape and the interpretation of works on paper.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEarlom’s subjects ranged from portraits, animals, and flower pieces to historical compositions and landscapes. His prints were admired for preserving both the texture and emotional character of the original works. Farington's design was after a painting by Jan Wyck (Dutch, 1645-1702) which hung at the time at Houghton House (Bedfordshire). This painting is now owned by The Hermitage, St. Petersburg. This painting by Wyck is itself a detail painted after a larger composition titled \"James Stuart, Duke of Richmond and Lennox\", painted by Anthony Van Dyck (Flemish, 1599-1641).
