When I started working for Richard Reed Armstrong Fine Art in 1998 most everything was sold at in-person shows or over the phone. All our sales were predicated on an exchange of stories. Today more than half the sales happen online, without much conversation at all. In an effort to share my side of the story, I have been adding short comments about what I see in a work of art I list online. Increasingly, when you click on an image that intrigues you, you will find at least some context about that particular work. It does however fit the scene more aptly. Three generations of fisherwomen are awaiting the return of the men. While the grandmother in the foreground seems stoic, used to the wait, or resigned to the possibility of loss of life, the young mother seems to squint, expectantly, hoping for a safe return. The girls have been dressed up, perhaps for Sunday mass, or simply to celebrate the return of their father. No matter the outcome, Villon chose to symbolize the harsh nature of this life with sharp-edged thistles in the foreground taking up nearly a quarter of the composition. They usually do not respond to the expected figure of the typical ballerina. Rather, they are muscular and seemingly taller figures. Where this inspiration came from is unclear. Amusingly, flowers are often part of these portraits. In our print no flowers can be found, but a watering can is resting on the floor, suggesting their presence nearby. His agrarian subject matters are any bit as attractive as his portraits and industrial images. With his choice of etching to depict the \u003ci data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eSheffield Steel Corporation\u003c\/i\u003e rather than lithography which Nesbitt used often, the artist shows his artistic intelligence. The effect of light emitted by the red-hot steel rods is uncanny. And while this composition may seem quite matter of fact, the poetic beauty of the well-organized shop floor, as well as the contrast and the grayscale are truly mesmerizing. One would almost dare say that what Martin Lewis did for rainy New York imagery, Nesbitt did any bit as well depicting metallurgy. Above is an elegant assortment of plants, mythical faces, hands joining in harmony and erotic amalgam of semi-nude women and one bird-man incarnate the era of free love. A background of repeating bands of color places the action in an immaterial neverland. While two have found a way to lean against the bench and thus avoid slumping, the man on the right seems inclined to fall over soon. This print depicts the sport at a time when few artists would have chosen it as a subject. The leather helmets which do not yet have protective face masks suggest a date of circa 1935. It is also clearly inspired by German Expressionist woodcuts which Scalzo would have only been exposed to firsthand while she studied at the Art Institute in Chicago. Our print was created by a woman artist, depicting a burly male activity, in a mostly rural part of the country. That such an artist, who had only spent two years in the big city would create such a strong, unique, and sophisticated woodcut, printed on a kind of paper you didn’t exactly find at the corner store, is simply stunning in many ways. The artist cut the plate down at the right side and at the bottom and scraped and burnished the background clean. The vaporous effect, one in which the praying hands and face seemingly emerge from the fog, must have haunted the artist’s mind as he was laboriously and meticulously drawing the sun’s rays and the veils pleats in the previous state. The work needed to scrape and burnish the whole background to obtain this new effect must have taken a lot of time and effort. While some impression shows San Francisco’s Union Square in bright sunlight, our impression is a dusk (or dawn) scene, with a chalky sky that shows a crescent moon. Other dusk time impressions are brighter or have a full moon instead. And the text on the billboards as well as the trolly (in ours: Powell and Market – Fisherman’s Wharf – Bay and Taylor) varies. The definition and presence of various figures and dogs also change in each impression. This was clearly a print meant to investigate possibilities for the artist. They form one single shape, united visually as they are in their common journey. Alongside stretches what could be a body of water, a canal perhaps. He is not looking at us, but rather past us. It’s as if he were unable to look the viewer in the eyes, as if it was too painful to question the viewer directly about why they could have done what they did to him. His crown of thorns has been depicted as a tangle of wooden spikes or metal nails, darting into his head from all angles. There is no pain in his face, but rather despondent and sad resignation. His eyes are large, with the white of the eyeball seemingly ready to shed tears. Christ’s mouth is shut. He hasn’t yet suffered enough to question his Maker about the reason why He has forsaken him. That depth of pain is yet to come. Odilon Redon captures a moment in a journey, one known to all in France when he created this image in 1887. It should be placed in a long tradition of devotional imagery, intended to make the viewer reflect on compassion. Redon’s great artistry places the viewer at the side of Christ, as he has already suffered greatly, but before his crucifixion and demise, depicting the moment’s emotion vividly. A woman reclines on a fancy sofa, atop what seem to be men’s clothes, while her own can be assumed to be on the floor. She is apparently gasping for air. The scene is set.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e It is also clearly an homage to Paul Delvaux, the famed Belgian surrealist painter, who obsessively depicted nude women around trains and train stations, usually at dusk or dawn, with a crescent moon often adding stillness to eerily quiet scenes. Riemiger must have had an encounter which prompted him to revisit this artistic concept. Or was he commissioned by a Delvaux enthusiast?
