Pink and White Ruffled Tulips

Date
circa 1920
Description

Tulpen (descriptive German title)

Color woodcut on thin Japan paper.
The edition, as usual, is unknown.  But Hugo Noske very exactingly and richly printed each of his prints by hand.  None of his editions therefore seem to have been large.
Signed in white ink in the image.  Annotated “Orig. Holzschnitt. Handdruck” (Original Woodcut. Impression by hand) in pencil.

This is a strangely dramatic still life.  These flowers, set in a teal-colored vase are placed on a table, which seems located in front of a rocky landscape.  It does not seem to belong there.  This sense of eeriness is heightened by the dramatic backlighting which forms a dark shadow on the side of the table closest to the viewer.  Noske composed an unusual floral still life.

Very slight toning as well as a few faint fox marks in the bottom margin.  Slight waviness of the paper in the corners mostly, due to prior hinges on the verso.  None of these mild condition issues affecting the image, which remains bright, and the colors fresh.
