Louis LEGRAND

In 1884 Louis Legrand (1863-1951) arrived in Paris, from his native Dijon, a provincial young man. He would not remain so for long. With a fierce talent for drawing, which tended towards social criticism, Legrand made his way as an illustrator for weekly magazines and as an apprentice to the depraved Belgian artist Félicien Rops. From Rops, Legrand learned printmaking, and he never looked back. Legrand continued to draw for publications on occasion, but as of the early 1890s he applied his talents as an etcher. Well versed in aquatint, sugar-lifts, soft-ground, pure etching and drypoint, Legrand depicted Paris’ underbelly, its young ballerina’s, its night life… Hundreds of prints, both monochromatic and in color attest to his great talent as the Belle Epoque etcher by excellence.

A l'Ombre (original French title)

Etching &drypoint on laid Louis Legrand paper.
Reference: Arwas 256; Exteens 229.
One of 4 impressions in the 1st state of 5, before the plate was cut down.
Published by Gustave Pellet, with his red monogram stamp (Lugt. 1192).
Signed and numbered "no.1/4" in pencil.

Apres le Bain (original French title)

Two impressions of a drypoint.
References: Exsteens 267; Arwas 378. By depicting a theater box, Legrand frames the composition within the confines of the rectangle, thus making the edges of this image sinuous and sensual. He adds a touch of color to make it resemble a watercolor. In the background lurks none other than Gustave Pellet, the publisher of this print. He is seen in at least one other composition lurking, which makes us suppose Legrand to have known him to be a known "lurker". The two women at the center of the composition couldn't be any more jaded. Their hats obstruct the view of the performance, and were clearly a bother, given the woman in the brown hat is still adjusting hers, while the one in the black hat has to fan herself. She is clearly hot, her eyes drooping; or simply bored. Either way, these women were here to be seen. The purpose of being noticed in such a context is open to interpretation, but also puts the performing arts of the time in a context that was often more about social constructs than passion for performance.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2654/1544/files/LouisLEGRAND-UneLoge-ATheaterBox-Drypointandaquatint-1910-detail.jpg?v=1716408683
https://armstrongfineart.com/collections/louis-legrand/subject_poetry+subject_public-park+format_horizontal-rectangle+scape_cafe-restaurant.oembed
