The Poacher, Dunes of Saint-John-of-the-Mount

Date
1901
Description

Le Braconnier, Dunes de Saint-Jean-de-Mont (original French title)

Printed with water based inks on thin laid japon paper.
Reference: Lotz-Brissonneau 273.
Less than forty impressions in all states. This is likely a proof between the second and third states. According to Lotz-Brissonneau, the back of the hunter is dark in the third state, and not in the second. This suggests our impression to be a second state. We have not, however, found any impressions with the back darkened. On the other hand the hill in the background should be printed in black in the second state, and brown in the third, which suggests our impression is a third state. Because so few impressions of the edition seem to have survived, it is difficult to gauge what we have here. In any case, this color woodcut is extremely scarce.
