Henri Joseph HARPIGNIES

Born in Valenciennes, Henri-Joseph Harpignies (1819-1916) came to art somewhat late, initially training for a career in business before pursuing formal artistic studies in his late twenties. He was deeply influenced by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, with whom he maintained a close friendship and artistic kinship. Harpignies is associated with the Barbizon School, although he retained a distinctly personal style marked by clarity of form and a refined tonal palette. He was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon and achieved considerable success during his lifetime. Harpignies traveled widely, but he remained devoted to capturing the natural beauty of the French countryside. He continued working into old age, and his long career helped to bridge the classical landscape tradition and emerging modern sensibilities of the 20th century.

Etching on chine-collé on wove paper.
References: Beraldi 5, BN-IFF 2-5.
From a series titled Essais de gravure à l'eau-forte, published by Binois de l'Epine, Valenciennes.
Scarce.
