This print depicts the sport at a time when few artists would have chosen it as a subject. The leather helmets which do not yet have protective face masks suggest a date of circa 1935. It is also clearly inspired by German Expressionist woodcuts which Scalzo would have only been exposed to firsthand while she studied at the Art Institute in Chicago. Our print was created by a woman artist, depicting a burly male activity, in a mostly rural part of the country. That such an artist, who had only spent two years in the big city would create such a strong, unique, and sophisticated woodcut, printed on a kind of paper you didn’t exactly find at the corner store, is simply stunning in many ways. His crown of thorns has been depicted as a tangle of wooden spikes or metal nails, darting into his head from all angles. There is no pain in his face, but rather despondent and sad resignation. His eyes are large, with the white of the eyeball seemingly ready to shed tears. Christ’s mouth is shut. He hasn’t yet suffered enough to question his Maker about the reason why He has forsaken him. That depth of pain is yet to come. Odilon Redon captures a moment in a journey, one known to all in France when he created this image in 1887. It should be placed in a long tradition of devotional imagery, intended to make the viewer reflect on compassion. Redon’s great artistry places the viewer at the side of Christ, as he has already suffered greatly, but before his crucifixion and demise, depicting the moment’s emotion vividly. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec loved the plays performed there and would sketch actors he admired in action. These sketches were made into some of his most famous black-and-white lithographs. Our print is one such dramatic rendering for a play which took place on 27 February 1894, titled \"L’Image\", written by Maurice Beaubourg. For this play, and another titled \"Une Nuit d'Avril à Céos\", Edouard Vuillard created a theater program (see \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.vangoghmuseum.nl\/en\/prints\/collection\/p1226V2000\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eHERE\u003c\/a\u003e) which was distributed to patrons who attended. The confrontation centers around the idea that Marcel projects artistic ideals of beauty onto Jeanne, who wishes to remain her own person, rather than a frozen image rendered by an artist. Bady’s face is turned away from us, forcing us to imagine her ire from the fright depicted in Lugné-Poé’s facial expression and demeanor. He is so scared he seems to have recessed into the wall. His face suggests anger on a level he has never experienced before. Berthe Bady could give a stare, obviously (see our last image)! We could not find an impression of the second state reproduced, but the catalog suggests that many of these lines in the background may have already been removed. By the third state, which is reproduced by Schiefler, most of the shading on the face is also gone. Hinges were removed, top verso, yielding two slightly lighter areas.
