These drawings have remained shielded from light for most of their life and retain exquisitely saturated colors. The designs are very forward thinking for their time, showing the way toward Art Nouveau. They are also attractive artistic objects, and rival in beauty actual ceramics of high quality of the late 19th century, due to their excellent condition of conservation.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2654/1544/files/Jules-Auguste_HABERT-DYS_-_Assiette_a_Couteau_no_7_-_Knife_Plate_7_-_drawing_-_1889_Paris_Exposition_-_Pillivuyt_-_detail.jpg?v=1732143630
study-for-architecture-1
Study for “Architecture”

Conté crayon on chiné pinkish-cream wove paper, circa 1878.

Study for one of the figures in Les Muses des Arts, a ceramic tile
decor created for the 1878 Paris Exposition, for Haviland. Beyond his predilection for urban imagery, Mosca clearly enjoyed figure drawing. In this genre, nudes of women are prevalent, which is not surprising given he was particularly skilled at depicting the human body. While this is no longer a must for many artists today, when Mosca came of age, drawing the human form with precision was still a skill one was required to learn in art school. Clearly he took to this practice like a fish to water. He went as far as to note on one of his extant self-portraits the following exclamation: “Ah! Drawing!”. This drawing, however, was most definitely intended to be used as a transfer drawing for a lithograph that never came to be. While the painting has the one-way sign in the right direction, the drawing has it in mirror-image, clearly intended to be transferred to stone as such, so as to print right-sided. Mosca, who tended to used mostly smooth papers for his drawings, used a textured sheet for this one, mimicking the grain of the lithographic stone.
