After serving with the United States Army in Vietnam from 1968 to 1971, he studied at the Portland School of Art, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Tufts University, and the Rhode Island School of Design, where he received his MFA in 1976. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThomas taught studio art at Emmanuel College in Boston from 1976 to 2001 and maintained a long association with the Boston Printmakers, serving as its president from 2007 to 2009.
